The arrival of the High Throughput Screening (HTS) technology was a revolution in research years ago, and it has become the fastest way to perform big compound screenings.
Currently, there are such a variety of screenings for key targets in many research fields like diabetes, virology, immuno-oncology… it’s a never ending list. Luminex® technology was developed to cover the need of big data analysis. This is a bead based techonology: each bead presents a different color code, and each one is conjugated with its specific analyte.
This allows simultaneous analysis of multiple analytes. You can find The Luminex® System in 3 different instruments – MAGPIX, LX200 and FLEXMAP 3D – that flexible analyzer based on the principles of quantitative fluorescent microscopy or fluorescent flow cytometry that is designed to meet the needs of any size research laboratory. The main characteristics of them are in the following table: While MAGPIX presents a LED/CCD camera optics, Luminex 100, 200 and FLEXMAP 3D are flow cytometry based systems.

The multiplex system allows for the simultaneously measurement of up to 80 different analytes from a single microplate well, using very small sample volumes. The system delivers fast and cost-effective immunoassay profiling and gene expression analysis through the multiplex quantitative measurement and detection of protein, RNA, and DNA. For example, after a cell culture is centrifuged, the supernatant is analyzed for multiple cytokines using the ProcartaPlex® assay. The cell pellet is then lysed and run using the QuantiGene® Plex assay in order to obtain gene expression data. All available in 96-well and 384-well formats for high-throughput analysis.
eBioscience multiplex assays are a proven technology on a trusted platform: Hundreds of peer-reviewed publications have cited QuantiGene® and ProcartaPlex®.
Affymetrix offers QuantiGene® Plex Assays for nucleic acid quantitation and ProcartaPlex® Multiplex Immunoassays for measurement of protein expression.
Main characteristics:
– Gene expression analysis: Measure up to 80 RNA transcripts in a single well.
– DNA copy number variation: Analyze copy number variation in multiple DNA targets.
– Multiplex immunoassays: Quantitate up to 80 analytes in only 25 μL of serum/plasma sample or 50 μL of cell culture supernatant.
