Antibody production

There are an infinite number of antibodies in the catalog. Even so, sometimes it is difficult to find THE antibody, with good specificity to the antigen or for the species of interest, or perhaps the one you have been using regularly has been discontinued. For these and other similar situations, we introduce you to our custom antibody production service.

Thanks to our suppliers’ expertise in antibody production, we can help you design and produce the antibody that you need, whether it is for common species (human, mouse, rat…) or less common species (such as plants, insects and fish).

With this service we cover antigen preparation, animal immunization, antibody detection and purification and, if desired, recombinant cloning.

To be considered for the design of a custom antibody:

1. Polyclonal o monoclonal

    • Polyclonal: set of antibodies that recognize the same protein in different ways. The cheapest and quickest option to produce.
    • Monoclonal: high affinity clones that require extensive trial and error screening.
    • Recombinant: option normally used for antigens that are difficult to prepare and/or immunize, necessary in clinical and diagnostic applications. It involves higher costs and production time.

2. Selection of antigen type

In general, there are three antigen design options: peptide, recombinant protein and cell or tissue. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. The choice of one or the other will depend on the difficulty of preparation, cost, immunogenicity and epitope specificity.

In some cases it will be necessary to combine the antigen with an adjuvant substance to facilitate the stability of the antigen and the immunization process.

3. Host selection

The most common hosts for antibody production are rabbit and mouse. Other less common choices include goat and humanized mouse, among others. There are two points to keep in mind:

    • The choice of host organism must be different from the species of the sample.
    • The amount, type of antibody, application and price required. For example, mice are cheaper but have a lower immune response than rabbits and are too small for polyclonal antibody production.
