Interleukin-36α, β and γ (IL-36α, β and γ) are part of the interleukin-1 (IL-1) family, they are pro-inflammatory cytokines involved mainly in inflammatory skin diseases, but also in inflammation organs such as the lung or intestine. Recently, a new protective role of the IL-36 family of cytokines in obesity and metabolic diseases has been described. IL-36γ has been shown to increase in the serum of obese patients with diabetes, indicating that elevated levels of IL-36 cytokines may play a protective role in lowering blood sugar levels. IL-36 cytokines work by changing the composition of the gut microbiome towards a metabolically healthier state. IL-36 cytokines increase secretion of goblet cells in the colon, promoting the growth of the commensal bacterial strain Akkermansia muciniphila, known to play an important protective role against obesity and metabolic dysfunction.
